Oh, in case you’re wondering, “Logos” is pronounced “low-gose”, and it is ancient Greek for word, knowledge, or reason. It is the source for many English words (all the …logies), such as logic, logarithm, terminology, prologue, and theology.

See, you learned something already!

About The Founder

Logos Tutoring was founded by Peter McCauley, Professor of Law (ret.). Mr. McCauley holds a JD degree (Doctor of Law) and a Masters degree in Molecular Biology. Mr. McCauley is a lifetime learner himself. He has been tutoring since 1993, and developed the current model for Logos Tutoring  over time. Mr. McCauley attended high school at The Trivium, a Great Books high school located in Lancaster, Massachusetts, dedicated to studying the original texts of the great minds of western civilization. He studied biochemistry at the undergraduate level, attaining a Bachelor of Science. He then worked as an educator for several years, teaching test preparation for an industry leader, and teaching biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics at the community college level. He then completed graduate school in biology with a Molecular Biology concentration, while achieving one of the highest scores in the country on the Medical College Admission Test (40T). His master’s thesis was on vaccine strategies for attacking antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Mr. McCauley then completed law school, with concentrations in Health Law and Intellectual Property. He was admitted into a top US medical school and a top MBA program but decided to defer both acceptances in order to devote himself to entrepreneurship with his company, Logos Tutoring. He then taught business law at a major university, before retiring to focus on entrepreneurship with Logos Tutoring. In his spare time, he enjoys cycling, playing keyboards, and reading anything he can get his hands on.

Corporate Logo

Our corporate logo of the owl sitting on a book was drawn by Mr. McCauley’s niece, Elizabeth Wood. The name of our mascot, the beautiful, mythological purple and gold owl wearing wire-rimmed glasses, is Mr. Sophos. The owl as a symbol of wisdom goes all the way back to Greek mythology, as Athena had an owl on her shoulder to symbolize her status as a goddess of wisdom. Athena herself may have been an owl in pre-historic times. Her tasseled shield, the aegis (pronounced ee-jis), may be the remnants of wings, and she is shown with wings in many Greek sculptures and paintings.
